Most agencies will <\/em><\/strong>want<\/em><\/strong> prepay review.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Review Choice Demonstration will be here in less than two months. Here\u2019s what smart home health agencies will be prioritizing between now and then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Stay tuned for every detail. <\/strong>Specifics are still emerging about the program, notes Joe Osentoski <\/strong>with Quality In Real Time <\/strong>in Troy, Michigan. In an April 3 RCD teleconference, HHH Medicare Administrative Contractor Palmetto GBA <\/strong>told attendees there would be a raft of telecon\u00adferences, webinars, and other educational events and materials taking place and being posted in the runup to RCD. \u201cTrack them down, put them on a schedule so all are attended, and use as many as possible to stay current with all aspects of restarting and then implementation as of June 1 for Illinois,\u201d Osentoski advises. HHAs in the other four demo states should consider hopping on these calls as well, he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Disseminate the information. <\/strong>It\u2019s not just management who needs to know about the new program. When you learn about RCD, make sure others who need to know are clued in as well. \u201cEnsure that the information is shared among agency planning staff,\u201d Osentoski urges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Decide which option is for you. <\/strong>\u201cHHAs should take immediate action to opt for the pre-claim review rather than just waiting and being forced into postpayment review,\u201d counsels Sandy McCleve <\/strong>of Advantage Healthcare Consulting Cost Report & Reimbursement <\/strong>in North Salt Lake, Utah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cvast majority\u201d of agencies should opt for Choice 1: Pre-claim Review, Osentoski agrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But just because it works for most, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s right for all, cautions reimbursement expert M. Aaron Little <\/strong>with BKD <\/strong>in Springfield, Missouri. \u201cIllinois agencies need to closely review the various options available to them and be thoughtful about their RCD selection,\u201d Little tells Eli<\/strong>. \u201cThere are operational and payment implications to either pre- or postpay review that every agency needs to really consider,\u201d he advises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Sign up to sign up. <\/strong>\u201cProviders will only be able to make their choice selection through [Palmetto\u2019s] eServices portal,\u201d the MAC emphasizes on its website. \u201cWe want to encourage all providers to sign up or verify your username and password.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consequences for not doing so are serious. \u201cProviders that do not make a selection prior to the selection period will be placed into a qualifying default option,\u201d i.e., Selection 2, Palmetto emphasizes (see related story, p. 98<\/em>). And if you can\u2019t sign into the system, you can\u2019t make your selection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Hit the deadline. <\/strong>Do not stall on signing up for eServices or choosing your option. \u201cDo not <\/em>be late on that,\u201d Osentoski stresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Start mapping out training.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThe \u2018how to\u2019 submit a pre-claim is perhaps the most important task to know for the RCD process,\u201d Osentoski judges. Your billing staff are going to need to know the ins and outs of the procedure before RCD begins. And your clinical staff who will collect and oversee the clinical documentation will need to learn how to do so quickly, efficiently, and accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
