CMS: Stick with one reporting method.<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n The 2019 hospice payment final rule offers providers some welcome clarifications on the changed drug reporting requirements.<\/p>\n Old way:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Currently, Medicare requires hospices to report line item drug data on their claims.<\/p>\n New way:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>Starting with the new fiscal year, \u201cproviders will have the option to continue to report infusion pumps and drugs \u2026 on the hospice claim as separate line items. This submission option will no longer be mandatory,\u201d the\u00a0Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services<\/strong>\u00a0says in the final rule published in the Aug. 6 Federal Register. \u201cAlternatively, hospices can submit total, aggregate DME and drug charges on the claim.\u201d<\/p>\n CMS made the change in its effort to provide regulatory burden relief to providers, it indicated in the proposed rule. The agency also explained the change in Change Request 10573, released the same day as the proposed rule.<\/p>\n While the change is \u201can improvement,\u201d billing expert\u00a0M. Aaron Little<\/strong>\u00a0with\u00a0BKD<\/strong>\u00a0in Springfield, Missouri judges that it\u2019s \u201cnot a huge burden relief.\u201d Still, it\u2019s \u201cnice to see this simplification offered,\u201d Little says.<\/p>\n But hospices commenting on the proposed rule asked CMS to provide some clarification on its instructions. \u201cSeveral commenters wanted to know if they needed to choose one option,\u201d the rule notes. \u201cSome commenters asked if the reporting method could be determined on a case by case basis or if all claims had to be submitted using the same reporting option, meaning whether some claims could be reported with detailed line item information while others reported in the aggregate.\u201d<\/p>\n In the rule, CMS points out that \u201cat this time, there is no claims processing edit prohibiting providers to submit both separate line item drug data and aggregate drug data on the claim.
