Hospice nursing supervisor admits to hastening patients\u2019 death with overmedication.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Two hospice fraud and abuse cases have widely publicized developments that may make hospices\u2019 missions harder.<\/p>\n

Case #1: Trustbridge<\/strong><\/span>, the West Palm Beach, Florida-based parent company of\u00a0Hospice of Palm Beach County\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Hospice By The Sea<\/strong>, has settled fraudulent billing charges from the government for nearly $1 million, reports\u00a0The Palm Beach Post<\/em>. The settlement comes after the company\u2019s 37 percent pay increase to Trustbridge CEO\u00a0David Fielding\u00a0<\/strong>in 2016, putting his pay at $954,071. Fielding also set the pay of at least seven other officers at more than $300,000 each in the latest year available, with three over $400,000, the newspaper says.<\/p>\n

A social worker who says she was fired for complaining about a lack of patient care resources told the newspaper she didn\u2019t get raises for years. And \u201cFielding\u2019s 37 percent raise is bigger than his 30 percent pay boost the same year a mother of three said the organization fired her because she could work only 30 hours a week while fighting breast cancer, the\u00a0Post\u00a0<\/em>reported in 2014.\u201d The hospice\u2019s retired founder called the firing \u201cunconscionable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post\u00a0<\/em>pointed out that Fielding\u2019s compensation is now nearly triple the pay of Palm Beach County\u2019s school superintendent in the nation\u2019s 11th<\/sup>largest school district, and almost four times that of the head of the local\u00a0United Way<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Case #2:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>Another of the 16 people indicted in the case involving\u00a0Novus Health Services\u00a0<\/strong>in Frisco, Texas, has entered a guilty plea to Medicare fraud charges. Former hospice nursing supervisor\u00a0Jessica Love<\/strong>, who is expected to testify against Novus owner\u00a0Brad Harris\u00a0<\/strong>and others, said that Harris gave instructions to nurses \u201cto intentionally overmedicate beneficiaries with medications such as hydromorphone and morphine with the intent to hasten their deaths,\u201d reports the\u00a0Associated Press<\/em>. \u201cHarris ordered these increases in medication because he wanted the beneficiaries to die.\u201d<\/p>\n

Love also admitted to sending texts to a nurse to turn off a patient\u2019s oxygen, increase Ativan and morphine and roll the patient onto their left side, saying that it \u201cworks like a charm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Director of operations\u00a0Melanie Murphey\u00a0<\/strong>pleaded guilty to charges in the case recently. The federal trial for the other defendants is scheduled for January, but Love\u2019s sentencing date hasn\u2019t been set,\u00a0AP\u00a0<\/em>says.<\/p>\n
